NEW COURSE FOR SPRING 2007

PHYSIOLOGICAL DISCUSSIONS

This course will provide an opportunity for students of Physiology to read and discuss current research papers in a faculty guided environment. Physiology faculty will select recent research papers that highlight new findings and/or topics currently under debate in their fields of expertise. The topics chosen for the semester will include selections from several of the following physiological disciplines:

  • Cardiovascular physiology
  • Respiratory physiology
  • Stem cells and tissue repair
  • Muscle physiology
  • Neurophysiology
  • Reproductive physiology

For each topic a faculty member will provide an overview of the research area and assign readings. Students, working in pairs, will then prepare and deliver PowerPoint ® based oral presentations based on the assigned research papers. Each research presentation will have a faculty advisor. The presentations will be followed by a whole class discussion of the topic.

Each student will have the opportunity to give two oral presentations during the course of the semester. Students will be evaluated based on the quality of their preparation, presentation, and participation in the class.

Prerequisites: Students will be expected to have successfully completed Phsl 3061/Phsl 3062 or have instructor permission.

Registration: 2 course credits of Phsl 5095-004 (a permission number is required)

Honors: This course qualifies for honors credit in physiology

Physiological Discussions will meet Thursdays from 4:00—5:30pm

For more information, or to request a permission number for registration please contact the course director: Dr. Vincent Barnett, Ph.D. 612 – 624-8135 or barne014@umn.edu
