NEW COURSE:
Human Power, Sports Performance and Disease Treatment

Spring 2008
Wednesdays · 12:10-2:50
Jackson Hall 6-135

Instructor: Dan Halvorsen, M.S. Ph.D.
Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology

Click here for flyer to post and distribute.

Dr. Halvorsen, a physiologist and nutritionist, is Clinic Director of the Kohl’s PowerCubed Exercise Medicine Clinic, located at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

This course will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students in physiology, kinesiology, physical therapy and related fields, as well as anyone interested in exercise physiology and sports medicine.

Students in the course will be expected to:

* read and critically evaluate assigned papers from the current literature
* participate in class discussions
* work in groups to prepare and make brief PowerPoint presentations

The goal of the course is to introduce and develop human power concepts that improve sports performance and enhance disease treatment. Having taken this course, students will understand:

* the significance and physiological effects of maximum oxygen uptake, anaerobic threshold, and ventilatory/lactate threshold on patients with asthma, diabetes, chronic fatigue, depression, obesity, fibromyalgia and other problems
* muscle power evaluation techniques and systems that lead to improvements in disease treatment, athletic performance and elite sports success

Registration is limited to 15 undergraduate or graduate students. Students will be expected to have previously taken a course in human physiology. Participants will register for PHSL 5315. Please pass this along to interested colleagues.

For more information, or a permission number to register, contact the Physiology Department at 612-625-5902 or Jess Sundin at sundi008@umn.edu.
